History

Amate Books bookstore was started in 1995 when the proprietors, Henry and Rosa Wangeman, began to feature books on Mexican Folk Art in their crafts store, Corazon del Pueblo in Oaxaca, Mexico. Shocked by at the high prices of English books distributed in Mexico, Henry began to import books himself. To complement the folk art books, Henry increased subject categories and titles to include his favorites titles on Mexico. Amate Books moved into its own space in 1999 and today has over 7000 tiles on Mexico and Latin America. In 2005 amatebooks.com was created to sell the most important books of its collection to the rest of Mexico.

Our webpage is the result of the constant encouragement of our clients who live in other parts of Mexico and who cannot travel to Oaxaca on a regular basis. We are proud of all the accolades we have received from the Mexican guide books: Frommer’s Mexico 2005 says, Amate Books “has perhaps the best selection anywhere of books in English about Mexico.”But we are even more thankful for and sustained by the enthusiasm and support of our customers whose positive comments and purchases have encouraged our growth and determination.
